ICT Approves Papagayo Marina
The Instituto Costarricense de
Turismo (ICT) approved the
creation of a marino on the Polo
Turístico Golfo de Papagayo in
Liberia, Guanacaste. The marina
will have 370 slips and the 20
year concession given to Marina
Papagayo.
The project will cost us$15
million dollars and will be
comprised of 44 hectares and
built near Playa Manzanillo.
The project is part of the
continuing development of the
area by the group Ecodesarrollo
Papagayo, which features the
luxurious Four Seasons Hotel
resort as the anchor. Other
luxury hotels and residential
developments are being planned
for the future.
The marina project was first
presented in January of 2004 and
approved last July. But it
wasn't until earlier this month
that the ICT ratified the
agreement. Construction of the
project will now depend on
Marina Papagayo.
Marina Papagayo will be second
development to attract upper
scale tourists. The first of
such marinas built was Marina
Los Sueños at Playa Herradura,
next to Playa Jacó.
The head of the ICT, Rodrigo
Castro, says that the type of
people attracted by the marinas
are a tourist of a "alto nivel"
- higher level - and have a high
purchasing power.
Other similar projects are being
planned for Golfito and Quepos.
