Divorce Rate Up
The number of divorces is up in
Costa Rica. In 1995 there were
only 4.000 separations recorded,
while in 2004 the number was
more than double at 9.000.
Experts say that adultery is the
number one cause of the
breakups, followed by a lack of
real commitment between the
couples and the poor economic
situation of the country.
The report shows that the
majority of breakups is between
couples that have been together
for 15 to 25 years and have
teenage children.
A divorce in Costa Rica can cost
up to ˘200.000 colones (us$400.)
and can take up to 18 months to
complete.
