Guatemala to CentAm Energy
Summit
Guatemalan President Oscar
Berger is attending a Summit
Monday and Tuesday in Cancun,
Mexico, with heads of state from
Mexico and Central America.
A government source said Berger
hopes Mexico will comply with
promises by President Vicente
Fox to run a refinery in
Guatemala relying on its
advantages over the other two
candidates, such as the
proximity to Mexico and their
own oil reserves.
The agenda covers electric
interconnection of Mexico and
Central America: Belize,
Guatemala, Honduras, El
Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica,
Panama and the Dominican
Republic.
Also in view are construction of
a gas pipeline and a
hydroelectric plant, the
regional interest for Mexico's
state-run Petroleos Mexicanos (PEMEX).
Mexico's energy secretary has
said the Inter-American
Development Bank will contribute
part of the five billion dollars
to fund the refinery and
together with PEMEX will decide
its best location.
