Small States Have Greatest
AIDS
According to statistics revealed
Monday, small countries like
Belize, Guatemala and Honduras
have the greatest HIV-AIDS
presence in Latin America, with
one percent of the adult
population infected, mainly due
to the combination of
unprotected sex and drug
injections.
A recent study published by the
UN HIV-AIDS Program (UNAIDS)
shows that the largest HIV
infection sector is men having
intercourse with other men, and
second place is prostitutes.
In Brazil, according to UNAIDS,
the epidemic is found in all 26
states and most of the new cases
are women, mainly the poorest.
In Chile and Uruguay most of the
cases are in the cities, while
in the Andean area HIV is caused
by unprotected sex and sex
between men, who then infect
their wives and girlfriends.
On the positive side, UNAIDS
revealed that infection from
mother to child has been reduced
in Colombia.
The access to antiretroviral
therapy has been considerably
expanded in Latin America with
the outstanding program
developed by Brazil, which
distributes medicines to all
patients.
UNAIDS recognized that treatment
coverage is also sizeable in
Argentina, Chile, Cuba, Mexico,
Uruguay and Venezuela.
