Colombia's Uribe Wants to Be Re-Elected
President Alvaro Uribe´s aspiration to be reelected in 2006 general elections dominated the political situation this week in Colombia.

Announcing his hope from Narino House (the Presidential headquarters), Uribe said he would work for Colombia to consolidate democratic security and achieve the social goals of wiping out poverty and corruption.

He said the Democratic Security policy, or war against any kind of opposition, is part of building a road to a country without terrorists or illegal drugs.

His presidential decision unleashed the campaign for general elections next year as he slammed violations of the Law on Electoral Guarantees.

His announcement from the Presidency and an interview for a local radio station made the National Electoral Council open investigations to determine whether the law on guarantees has been violated.

Parties from all tendencies are adjusting their electoral machineries to face what is expected to be an atypical campaign, as this is the first time an incumbent president wants to be re-elected.
