Cuba Praises UN Verdict on
Anti-Terrorists
Cuba praised the moral value of
the verdict from the UN Group
for Arbitrary Detentions on the
arrest and sentences against
five Cuban anti-terrorists in
Florida, United States.
Attorneys Roberto Gonzalez and
Roberto Davalos said the
prestigious UN panel conclusion
issued May 27 renders the arrest
and sentences against the Cuban
Five illegal because of the
evident political interests
involved and violation of US and
international laws.
Among the gross and obvious
violations lie solitary
confinement, the manipulation of
the Act for the Protection of
Classified Information, and
holding the trial in an adverse
environment like Miami that led
the prosecutors to declare them
a threat for national security
in 2001.
Gerardo Hernandez is serving two
life sentences plus 15 years,
Ramon Labañino and Antonio
Guerrero were given one life
sentence each plus 18 years and
10 years respectively, Fernando
Gonzalez is serving 19 years and
Rene Gonzalez 15 years.
They were arrested September
1998 and submitted to 17 months
in solitary confinement as
foreign agents that had
allegedly conspired to commit
espionage to collect information
on terrorist groups with a bulky
dossier of anti-Cuba operations
in south Florida.
The relevance of the UN release,
a purely technical report that
strictly relies on legal
procedures, lies in the fact
that the 11th Circuit from the
Court of Appeal of Atlanta was
supplied the same documents from
March 2004.
There are currently 246
committees for the release of
the Cuban Five in 82 countries
and Gonzalez and Davalos agree
that such conclusion will boost
international demand for justice
for the five Cuban
anti-terrorists.
