Tico Gets Top Grade in GRE
Being deaf was not an obstacle
for Costa Rican Alvaro
Ramos-Chaves, 21, to get a
perfect grade, 800, in the
verbal and math areas of the
Graduate Record Examinations
(GRE) for admission to U.S.
universities.
Taken by some 400,000 students
every year, seldom does someone
score a double 800.
Alvaro, who wants to get a Ph.
D. in economy, says that the
doctor's degree is not a goal in
itself, because his aim is
giving Costa Rica something back
for the things the country has
enabled him to do.
A reader since he was 3, Alvaro
attended the Fernando Centeno
Güell School, a public
institution for the handicapped,
where he learned to overcome his
deafness.
He remarks, however, that it has
been the rigor of the School of
Economy of the University of
Costa Rica what has enabled him
to reach unexpected heights.
But Alvaro does not dedicate
only to books, since he always
finds time to share with a group
of friends and with his
girlfriend.
