US donates 10 aircraft to
Colombia
The United States has donated to
Colombia four airplanes and six
helicopters to support the South
American country's efforts to
fight drug trafficking and
terrorism, the Colombian Defense
Ministry said Friday.
The aircraft, valued at 52
million US dollars, is part of
the US contribution to Plan
Colombia, which Washington has
funded with3.3 billion dollars
since 2000 when the program was
launched.
The donation includes two Black
Hawk and four UH1N helicopters,
plus two King Air light
airplanes, and two C-47 planes
with medical and intelligence
equipment, said Deputy Defense
Minister Jorge Mario Eastman
Robledo. They will be used to
evacuate injured people and
guard combat zones.
"We think the planes and
helicopters will be arriving in
the country early next year," he
said.
Colombia is one of the principal
receivers of assistance from the
United States.
