"Diay" Now An Official Word
The term "diay" commonly used by
Ticos now officially forms part
of the Spanish language after
being included in the
Diccionario de la Real Academia
Española (2001).

interrogación, admiración, ignorancia o desconocimiento.

Diay is now part of the 11.425
words that are includd in the
new edition wich was revealed to
the press yesterday.
Diay has become a famous "costarriqueñismo"
that is used frequently similar
to "well" in the English
language. President Abel Pacheco
is perhaps most famous for his "diay"
in many of his informal talks
and presentation, though seldom
used in formal speeches.
The Real Academia Española
continues to work on the
evolution of the Spanish
language and includes new words
that form part of the everyday
use and remove those words that
lost meaning.
The publication is a
collaboration of 21 language
academies from Latin America
working with the central offices
of the Diccionario de la Real
Academia Española in Spain.
