18 killed in clash between
Colombian soldiers, rebels
Two soldiers and at least 16
rebels of the Revolutionary
Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC)
were killed during a military
operation by government troops
in the southwest region of
Toribio on Sunday, officials
said.
The operation was a
counterattack launched following
a FARC assault on the towns of
Jambalo and Toribio in Cauca
department on Thursday, which
left three policemen and a girl
dead and 23 people wounded.
Colombia has been ravaged by a
four-decade-long civil war, in
which government forces, leftist
guerrillas and far right
paramilitaries fight one
another.
The FARC is the main guerrilla
organization of Colombia with a
force of some 17,000 to 20,000
fighters.
