"Long Weekend" Proposal Gets Presidential Nod
The proposed law to move holidays that fall during the week to Mondays has been positively endorsed by President Abel Pacheco.

The proposal is to move holidays like Dia de la Independencia (Septermber 15) and Mother's Day (August 15), for example, to a Monday if it falls between Tuesday and Friday.

"I will approve the decree to the law because it does not impede the celebration of the holiday..." were the words of the president.

Critics say that if the holiday is moved to a different day, the traditions of the holiday will be lost.

The president says he has listened to all the arguments and believes that the "long weekend" result of the new law is beneficial to the family unity, it will bring families together. In the case of Mother's Day, Pacheco said, "for those who have the happiness to have a living mother or grandmother, can now celebrate it together on the same day."

Holidays sometimes can prove difficult for families as some employers have already adopted giving a long weekend to workers, while many still haven't and insist on giving the day off as it falls on the calendar.
