Exporters Face Container
Shortage
The ever-increasing demand in
Iraq and China lowered the
availability of containers in
Costa Rica, whose exporters -
particularly those of fresh
produce - have suffered delays
in their shipments abroad.
Sector sources said that the
payment offered for containers
destined to the re-construction
of Iraq and the growing needs of
China is such that even
refrigerated units have been
used to carry dry goods.
The issue was more evident this
year's first quarter, when the
exports of canteloupes,
pineapples, watermelons,
decoration plants, and similar
products peak.
According to the sources, some
farms were not able to export 15
percent of their products, just
because of the container
shortage, a blow to their
economy.
