Chilean candidate to continue
campaign for OAS top job
Chilean Interior Minister Jose
Miguel Insulza said on Wednesday
he decided to maintain his
candidacy for secretary general
of the Organization of American
States (OAS).
"You know me well, you know the
things I do, I do them because I
want to represent the interests
of Chile," said Insulza.
He did not rule out the
possibility of withdrawing if
Santiago makes such a decision.
But Insulza said his government
has already made clear its
stance on the issue, so he would
go on with his campaign.
Insulza made the remarks after a
meeting with Chilean President
Ricardo Lagos Escobar, Foreign
Minister Ignacio Walker and
other officials over the OAS
election.
On Monday, Insulza and Mexican
Foreign Minister Luis Ernesto
Derbez were left at a 17-17 tie
after five rounds of voting. The
OAS will continue the polls on
May 2.
President Lagos said the
important thing was not whether
Insulza could take the post, but
how to make the OAS do more for
Latin American countries. He
also said the possibility of
nominating a third candidate
still exists.
