Chile, Italy sign agreement on geothermal
energy
The National Petroleum Company (ENAP)
of Chile and Italy's electricity firm ENEL signed an agreement on
Wednesday to jointly exploit geothermal resources.
Under the agreement, through an exchange of bonds, ENEL will acquire 51
percent of shares in Chile's National Geothermal Energy Company (ENAG),
while ENAP owns 49 percent of the shares.
The agreement was signed by ENAP General Director Enrique Davila and
ENEL's President for Latin America Valerio Cecchi Rafanelli at a
ceremony presided over by Chile's Secretary of the National Energy
Commission Luis Sanchez.
Through the agreement, ENAP will regain strength in activities related
to geothermal energy, Davila said, adding that Chile has rich geothermal
resources for the production of electricity.
ENEL, Italy's top developer of geothermal resources, is the biggest
Italian electricity firm and one of the most important in Europe, with
more than 46,000 megawatts of installed capacity.
