Costa Rica recorded more murders than traffic deaths in 2015
January 5th, 2016 (ICR News) Despite its distinction of having the worst roads in Central America (according to the IMF) Costa Rica recorded more murders than traffic fatalities in 2015, a year which set a new record for homicides in the country.
More than 550 people were the victims of intentional homicide last year, compared to 398 people who died on the country’s roadways.
By December 11th, the country had already set a new yearly record for homicide, with 527 dead. At least 25 additional homicides were recorded during the last 20 days of that month.
Costa Rica ended 2015 with a murder rate of 11.5 per 100,000; the World Health Organization (WHO) describes a homicide rate of 10 per 100,000 or greater as an “epidemic.”
According to official estimates, some 30 percent of homicides last year were attributed to organized crime.
