ICR NEWS BRIEF

January 4th, 2016 (ICR News) Riteve, the Spanish company that holds the government concession to provide annual mandatory vehicle inspections (RTV) in Costa Rica, will begin checking odometers effective Monday, January 4th.

Under the new rules, if a vehicle’s odometer reads less mileage than the year prior, the vehicle will receive a “minor” (leve) defect mark on its inspection certificate, indicating the discrepancy, but can still pass inspection.

If a vehicle’s odometer is unreadable, or it has been removed from the vehicle since the time the vehicle was imported into the country, the vehicle will fail inspection.

That’s right! There is no law in Costa Rica forbidden the turning back of the odometer. I found that out when I paid a lot of money for a car with 99,000 miles on it. Later I discovered it had 199,000 on it. Went to court. Found out no law was broken.

Ever wonder why there are few Tico business partnerships? Trust is not in their dictionary.

If Diogenes had ever visited Costa Rica, he would undoubtedly committed suicide. Diogenes was the guy searching all over the world for an honest person.
