Costa Rica’s child welfare agency to purchase Christmas gifts for Cuban migrant children
December 21st, 2015 (ICR News) Costa Rica’s child welfare agency, known as PANI will deliver Christmas gifts to Cuban migrant children who have been stranded along with their parents in the country since November 15th.
PANI said that officials would distribute dolls, Legos, balls, toy cars, and electronic games to some 200 children and adolescents. The toys were paid for by the agency at a cost of ¢1,100,000 (about US $2,000).
Officials will also ensure that the children are receiving adequate and comprehensive care in the facilities that have been established to temporarily house the migrants.
More than 5,000 Cuban migrants are currently stranded in the country after Nicaragua decided on November 15th to close their border to the Cubans, who are attempting to make their way to the United States.
On Friday, Costa Rica announced it would stop issuing transit visas for Cubans to travel through the country after a summit of Central American countries in El Salvador failed to result in a consensus on dealing with the crisis.
