Canadian man with long criminal history amongst armed robbers of Cartago business for lottery tickets

November 27th, 2015 (ICR News) A Canadian man with a criminal history was one of four men who conducted an armed robbery of a Cartago business late Wednesday night, in which the bandits stole ¢7 million worth of lottery tickets, according to authorities.

 

The Canadian man, identified by the last name Prost, along with three Costa Rican men, crashed a vehicle through a security gate of the business where the owners also apparently lived, and threatened the owners with firearms before making off with lottery tickets worth some ¢7 million as well as ¢500,000 in coins.

 

The owners immediately notified authorities, who set up road blocks in the area.  After encountering police, the suspects attempted to flee, leading police on a high-speed chase, according to official reports.

 

The chase came to an end after the suspects again crashed the vehicle in which they were traveling into a house, where relatives of one of the suspects apparently lives.  The suspects gave themselves up after a short standoff from inside the home, according to reports.

 

The Canadian man, known by the nickname “Gringo,” has previously been arrested on charges of robbery, aggravated robbery, theft, illegal possession of a firearm, as well as numerous drug charges.

 

Police were able to recover the stolen lottery tickets and change.

 

The men were taken to jail and faces charges of armed robbery.

    I’m curious to know what Prost’s legal status is in Costa Rica. It’s not relevant to the story, but with a rap sheet like his, I have to wonder why he wasn’t deported long ago. More generally, I wonder what rights to remain are conferred by the different residency categories vs. when legal residency can be revoked.

      Ken, you seem to confer that he was persona non-grata. I propose they may be retaining him on grounds he is an ideal role model for generations to come. Why send him away when he could become a symbol of teaching the younger generation about their heritage and practices. Just saying.

        Funny, However so true. Also to mention My Canadian friends do not like being called “gringo” they see it as the USA not them. Are you as surprised as I am the police actually caught these guys and the loot? I sure am. I suppose they will be out on the streets again and soon.
