Syrians arrested at Honduras airport arrived from Costa Rica; authorities search for terrorism links

UPDATE: November 20th – Honduran authorities said late Thursday that the men are not believed to have any ties to international terrorism.

November 19th, 2015 (ICR News) Five Syrian citizens who were arrested Wednesday at the Toncontin International Airport in Honduras as they were preparing to travel to the United States with stolen Greek passports arrived on a flight from Costa Rica, according to information obtained by ICR News.  The men are believed to have spent six days in Costa Rica.

 

Initial reports by the EFE news agency indicated that the men had arrived on a flight from El Salvador, but information obtained by ICR News indicate that the men traveled a route from Syria-Lebanon-Brazil-Argentina-Costa Rica before arriving in Honduras.

 

Meanwhile, authorities in Honduras said they are investigating if the men are in any way connected to international terrorism, in light of the recent attacks in Paris.  “The government of Honduras is on alert for what is happening at an international level,” a police spokesperson said.  For the time being, they are being held on charges of falsifying an official travel document.

 

The passports that the five men presented had been stolen in Greece, police spokesman Anibal Baca said.  It is unknown how the men obtained the documents.

 

The spokesman for the Honduran inter-agency security force, Santos Nolasco, told reporters that last Friday authorities had arrested another Syrian citizen at Toncontin airport.

 

That individual also entered Honduras with a false Greek passport and was deported to Syria on Tuesday, Nolasco added without providing further details on the case.

 

Hundreds of thousands of people have been fleeing Syria since the civil war broke out there in 2011, a conflict that has left more than 250,000 people dead and 13 million refugees, according to United Nations figures.

    The media needs to get use to these things happening they sometime make thing into big issues when they are really not much to talk about.

      All or some of them may not even be real Syrians, but Arabs or Turks passing as Syrians, something that has become somewhat commonplace these days.

        Let’s get real on what is really going on in the Middle East. Many people think the US policy is problem in the Middle East but crazy people come from everywhere in the world. We need to correct people that want us to live in fear. The media wants us to live in fear and many goverments like to say that stuff is going to happen. I know many Arabs in Costa Rica that are great people i also know many US and Canadian Citizen’s in Costa Rica that are crazy. Let’s correct the media from taking a story and saying more that it really says. . Lots of people in the middle east just want a place to live in peace. Sorry about my spelling.

    Costa Rican goverment should not be blamed for anything. How do you blame Costa Rican goverment for the mess in the Middle East? The Media wants to scare people with these stories.

    Except for the fact that they were finally caught, this doesn’t look good.

    Five guys using stolen passports to take six separate flights to get to the US, but dallying several days in some of the countries en route, would not appear to be economic migrants. This is a lot of money to spend on the trip, and even if economic migrants had this kind of money to spend, I doubt they’d dawdle for six days in Costa Rica. They’d move on quickly. Also, while some single male economic migrants might head out initially without their families, and could perhaps make the initial journey with buddies, I think most would probably go with their families.

    Five guys traveling together on a trip like this looks plenty suspicious. Of course, there are probably 500 more like them, which raises the question of how they managed to make it through four countries with their bogus Greek passports coupled with their inability to speak Greek not raising any red flags. You’d like to think that immigration officials are more on top of things than this.

    implied but not stated definitively the next stop was the USA. implying but not stating they had tickets. anyone familiar with getting foreign nationals into the USA knows that a ticket purchase auto starts a scan of all available data bases for anomalies. ya gotta guess a sold or stolen altered passport lit up like a Christmas tree as it does every day. they rarely even make it on board the flight. a good story would be how rare altered passports work with USA visas but still work with most countries not attached to anything but Interpol and their internal data.
