November 2nd, 2015 (ICR News) Costa Rican president Luis Guillermo Solis hopes to discuss issues of investment, trade, tourism and health with his Cuban counterpart, Raul Castro, during an official State visit in December, the president said on Friday.

 

President Solis said on Friday that his visit to Cuba – scheduled for December 15-16 and the first official State visit by a sitting Costa Rican president since the end of Cuban Revolution – is part of his administration’s intentions to strengthen its ties with Caribbean nations as well as China.

 

Costa Rican officials confirmed the State visit last week, saying at the time that the administration’s agenda had yet to be determined.

 

The two countries reestablished diplomatic relations on March 19, 2009 during the administration of former Costa Rican president Oscar Arias (2006-2010), though no sitting Costa Rican president has ever made an official State visit to Cuba since the end of the island nation’s 1959 revolution which brought communist leader Fidel Castro to power.

 

Former president Laura Chinchilla (2010-2014) visited Cuba on January 28th, 2014, though the trip was not considered an official State visit as it was under the auspices of the Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC).
