Government, unions reach midnight agreement to lift strikes

October 27th, 2015 (ICR News) The government and representatives of the union bloc known as Patria Justa signed an agreement shortly after midnight on Tuesday morning to end – at least for now – a strike by public sector labor unions that began on Monday.

 

The strike had disrupted the delivery of fuel to gas stations and airports in the country and also brought the country’s Atlantic ports to a standstill, amongst other interruptions to public services.

 

Details of the agreement were scarce Tuesday morning.

 

The union bloc Patria Justa consists of the unions of Atlantic dockworkers, the Costa Rican Oil Refinery (RECOPE) workers union, the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE) workers union, and some 55 municipal workers unions across the country.

 

Other unions allied with Patria Justa that participated in the strike included the National Association of Public and Private Employees (ANEP), the National Insurance Institute (INS) workers union (UPINS), the nurses’ union, and several others including unions representing health, education, and immigration workers.

    I believe that the low participation by Union members in the strike on Monday says it all. Now it’s the Government’s responsibility to get on with doing what’s correct in the minds of the Costa Rican citizenry in general and in the best interests of Costa Rica as a whole; it’s all been said previously.

      And it will probably be said a thousand more times before that actually comes to fruition.

    The Public sector including the President and Elected officials should have their pay cut 50% and benefits cut 100% they make way to much and do way too little.

    What the deal? How much money are they getting?

      The Agreement is merely an agreement to discuss union grievances further in the Legislature, or otherwise, but not to make any concessions in favour of the unions who participated, which are largely Public Sector unions.
