Nicaragua constructing nine artificial islands to boost tourism

October 6th, 2015 (ICR News) Nicaragua plans to construct nine artificial islands that it hopes will attract tourism to its southern Caribbean coast, according to Nicaragua’s National Port Company (EPN).

The islands will be created in Bluefields Bay, opposite the city of the same name, according to El Nuevo Diario.

Construction will take place throughout this month, using 581,442 cubic meters of material that will be dredged from the Bay of Bluefields, with the goal of completing the islands in November, according to EPN.

The dredging will also allow boats with drafts of up to six meters deep to access the port of Bluefields, which is the largest city in the autonomous Sothern Caribbean Region (RACS).

EPN did not say what sort of tourism facilities would eventually be constructed on the islands.
