Driver caught carrying $17,000 in cash sentenced to 10 years in prison

October 2nd, 2015 (ICR News) A three-judge panel in Liberia, Guanacaste sentenced this week a Honduran truck driver to 10 years in prison for the crime of money laundering.

 

The driver, Jairo Esquivel, was arrested in November 2014 at the Peñas Blancas border crossing with Nicaragua after police discovered US $17,700 in cash hidden in the cab of his truck.

 

Esquivel was unable to explain or prove the origin of the funds.

    How do these guys get caught? How do police just “find” money that is probably well hidden in a truck? Somebody has to be ratting these guys out, so police make extra effort to search for money they already know is there. We drove our car back and forth through Peñas Blancas and didn’t get searched at all. Was this guy just unlucky, or are the police that good at knowing when to search for hidden cash?

      I smell a rat, ratted him out .. 17K what they claim they got, Really! I think murders , rapist get less than this. Maybe just take the money and the truck sell that and set this guy free to explain to his boss what happened. Save the prison space for the dangerous criminal not just a mule.
