“Seismic swarm” of small to moderate earthquakes strike off Nicoya coast

September 23rd, 2015 (ICR News) A so-called “seismic swarm” of six small to moderate earthquakes occurred off the coast of the Nicoya Peninsula on Tuesday morning, according to the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory (OVSICORI).
The strongest tremor, and the only one reportedly felt by some residents in Guanacaste and the Central Valley, measured 4.8-magnitude on the Richter scale, striking at 9:06 a.m.
The other five tremors measured between 2.7 and 3.9-magnitude.
The epicenter of the activity was some 90 kilometers southwest of Cabo Blanco, all with an average depth of 28 kilometers.
OVSICORI geologist, Victor Gonzalez said the tremors were caused by typical activity within the Cocos plate and have no relation to the 2012 Nicoya earthquake.
Gonzalez said it “remains to be seen” if the activity could continue.
