Costa Rica is open to receiving Syrian refugees, Foreign Ministry says

September 8th, 2015 (ICR News) Costa Rica is prepared to receive refugees from war-torn Syria, a spokesperson for the country’s Foreign Ministry tells Amelia Rueda.

 

Syrians seeking refugee status would be asked to provide a clean criminal record from their home country, as do others who more commonly seek refugee status in Costa Rica, such as Colombian nationals, the spokesperson said.

 

Those who receive refugee status would receive shelter, food, and assistance in finding employment, as well as access to support groups for refugees, the Ministry official said.

 

More than four million Syrians have fled their war-torn country so far this year, according to the UN High Commission for Refugees, sparking a serious immigration crisis in Europe.

 

Several other Latin American countries have offered to take in Syrian refugees in recent days, including Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, and Venezuela.

    First, this is the humanitarian thing to do, and I’m proud to live in a country willing to step up to its humantiarian obligations.

    Second, it’s the economically smart thing to do. Unlike some immigrants who just buy up property, sit on barstools, chase women, and complain about their host country, refugees tend to be young, able, hard-working, and eager to succeed economically in their new countries. It is woefully shortsighted of anyone to see the upfront cost of refugee resettlment as a loss. In reality it’s a wise investment.

    Third, of course documentation will be hard to obtain. It always is in the case of refugees, and both Europe and the US face the same difficulties. Odds are therefore that a few bad apples will slip through. However, the last I looked Costa Rica wasn’t among the countries that ISIS is targeting. If countries that ISIS is targeting are willing to deal with the risks of having a few bad apples slip in, Costa Rica certainly should take the far lesser risks.

      I completely agree with you Ken. I wonder how many of the people making negative comments actually know anyone who is Muslim. I have several Muslim friends and they are wonderful people and very hardworking. One is even an elementary school teacher in the US. They do not force their beliefs on anyone, they will answer any questions that I ask about their religion, just as I will answer any questions about being Christian. As a Christian the Lord told us to help those in need and I will do it. God bless you Ken.
