August 31st, 2015 (ICR News) Authorities discovered the remains of Jose Orlando Gomez Gomez Friday afternoon, a mountain biker that had been missing for five days after mysteriously disappearing while participating in a friendly cycling route with other enthusiasts on Sunday, August 23rd, though the discovery has only deepened the mystery surrounding the man’s disappearance and death.

 

Gomez, 57, a resident of Perez Zeledon and father of one, was participating on a cycling trip from downtown San Isidro (PZ) to Uvita de Osa, via a 36-kilometer route known as San Rafael Platanares, according to La Nacion.

 

Fellow cyclists reported that they last saw Gomez just 3 kilometers from the finish line.

 

Shortly after 6pm on Friday, the five-day search for Gomez came to an end when authorities discovered the man’s body in a pond on a remote and difficult-to-access farm located at least two hours walking distance from where the man was last seen.

 

Authorities said that Gomez’s body displayed no signs of injury that would indicate foul play.  His bicycle has yet to be found.

 

Gomez’s remains were sent to the Judicial Morgue where authorities hope that an autopsy may reveal the cause and manner of death.

 

The man’s wife said last week while the search was still ongoing that Gomez had been practicing mountain biking for eight years and had no health problems.

    A high end bicycle can cost well over 1K here.. So a missing bike ! well looks very specious.. I remember years ago where some other cyclists were murdered for their bicycle.. A shame nowhere safe it seems.

      don’t arrive to conclusions before the autopsy. More people die from other causes then murder.

        The fact his bike is missing would lead any logical mind to a conclusion that foul play was involved. Especially considering he was seen 3km from the finish line. He was in good health.

        But, yes, hopefully more clues will surface. I am not sure what clues an autopsy could possibly find in a case like this?

        Instead of waiting for autopsy results, and active investigation should continue on sight by interviewing people. The more time that passes, the harder it will be to solve. I wonder if his bike was one of the more expensive bikes in the race? That would be a strong clue in itself.

          No no, i’m not saying investigating police should relax in any way but before YOU say it’s murder and then say we are not safe anywhere and saying it is a forgone conclusion you should wait.
          The fact the bike is missing is not necessarily anything else than someone took it.
          He could have had a heart attack, stroke, epileptic seizure, snake bite but there appeared no evidence of violence so…
          It is possible that the worse happened but he was old and undergoing intense stress.

    Disgusted, you said people were murdered for their bicycles? Man it is getting super desperate and dangerous. This guy turned up in a pond miles from the race track? And his bike is missing? What a bunch of shit-you can’t even go biking without being Shanghaied ! F’in Dangerous man! I guess a guy needs to carry all the time and be on high military Green Beret style of alert at all times! Sheesh- I think it is the same as being in a war zone. This sounds like Nicaragua where I was kidnapped during a daylight tour of a mall in Managua. Never drop your guard people. It could cost you your life. I knew a gringo who always told me nothing happened to him. Well he was lucky. His luck ran out eventually though and he ended up in prison in Honduras. He was very lucky in Costa Rica. Just because it hasn’t happened to you YET–don’t be fooled–Your luck can run out any time. If you are in Costa Rica–never trust anyone! Take it from me– it is super dangerous there because there is not the same amount of police presence as in USA and you can disappear anytime anywhere.They will kill you over your bicycle..even I didn’t think of that.
