US lifts credit, aid restrictions after Nicaragua resolves cases of seized properties

August 7^th, 2015 (ICR News) The United States announced this week that it has lifted restrictions that required the Nicaraguan government to seek an annual waiver to receive access to international credit and bilateral assistance.

The restrictions, which date back to 1994, were the result of a number of property claims by U.S. citizens who had their properties seized by the Sandinista government during the country’s revolution in the 1980’s.

The U.S. Embassy in Managua said in a statement on Wednesday that in the last twelve months, the government of Nicaragua had managed to resolve the last 30 cases to the satisfaction of all those involved.

The United States said it hopes the government of President Daniel Ortega “maintains its commitment to protect private property rights of all American citizens in Nicaragua.”

More than 3,000 U.S. citizens had filed claims over property that had been confiscated by the Sandinistas.
