Costa Rica ranked 34th of 162 countries in latest Global Peace Index

June 19th, 2015 (InsideCostaRica.com) Costa Rica is ranked 34th of 162 countries in the Global Peace Index (GPI) this year, published Wednesday by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP). Costa Rica is ranked 1st from a total of 12 in Central America and the Caribbean.

The IEP estimates that the economic impact of violence cost the Costa Rica national economy $3.9 billion in 2014.  This amounts to 5.5% of Costa Rica’s GDP or US $804 per person, according to IEP’s estimates.  Costa Rica is in position 73 of the world’s highest per capita expenditures related to violence, according to the IEP.

“Costa Rica has had fairly stable levels of peace, with little change in the last eight years since the first Index was published.  This is in part due to low levels of militarization,” the IEP said in a press release, adding that the country saw an improvement in its score for homicide.

The Global Peace Index gauges global peace using three broad themes: the level of safety and security in society, the extent of domestic and international conflict, and the degree of militarization.  Factors are both internal such as levels of violence and crime within the country and external such as military expenditure and wars.
