June 18th, 2015 (InsideCostaRica.com) According to the latest opinion poll by the Costa Rica Institute of Technology (TEC), 51.1% of Costa Ricans support exploration for oil and natural gas within national territory.
Of the 511 respondents, an additional 12.1% said they would favor exploration under certain conditions, while 32.1% said they oppose exploration.
However, an overwhelming majority – 82.1%, said they oppose exploration in national parks and protected areas.
The most likely areas for exploration would be offshore of the country’s Atlantic coast and in the northern central highlands of San Carlos, according to experts.
A bill being analyzed by the Supreme Elections Tribunal (TSE) seeks to hold a national referendum on the issue.
