One of Costa Rica’s sextuplets dies; doctors blame underdeveloped lungs

May 21^st, 2015 (InsideCostaRica.com) The fourth child born in Costa Rica’s first-ever set of sextuplets died Wednesday afternoon.

Doctors blame respiratory failure due to the baby’s underdeveloped lungs, which then led to cardiac arrest, as the cause of death of Diego Gonzalez Villegas, who survived outside the womb for just 65 hours.  The baby had been on ventilation.

Silvia Villegas, 34 of Heredia gave birth on Sunday to Costa Rica’s first sextuplets.

The babies, who were delivered via cesarean after six months of gestation, weighed in between 2 and 2.5 pounds (900 and 1,100 grams) at the time of their birth, according to a hospital official.
