Nine police officers sentenced for robbing drug traffickers of cocaine in illegal raids

May 21st, 2015 (InsideCostaRica.com) Nine police officers who formerly worked in the Coronado, Moravia, Escazu and Goicoechea precincts were sentenced to between 15 and 28 years in prison this week for conducting illegal and unauthorized raids on the homes of drug traffickers in order to steal and re-traffic their cocaine.

 

Six others involved in the scheme had already been sentenced to between 12 and 14 years in December 2012.

 

The former officers were convicted on charges of drug trafficking, conspiracy, aggravated robbery, and embezzlement.

 

The officers were arrested on February 2nd, 2011 in a series of raids conducted by the Drug Control Police (PCD).

 

The officers also stole cash and other property from the homes of drug traffickers that they illegally raided, according to prosecutors.

    The Drug Control Police should now investigate what is going on with rogue elements that are operating out of Santa Cruz, Guanacaste- where the same type of behavior has been taking place with agents of the OIJ office there, including the OIJ Santa Cruz Jefe, who is the root of this behavior. A case stemming back to April 29, 2011 is currently being investigated by Oficina de Asuntos lnternos: Nº 031-DRG-14

    ….Costa Rica can not successfully fight crime by letting rogue government employees operate organized crime syndicates from within. These people should have been suspended immediately, while the investigation takes place. The blatant falsification of documents, irregularities of procedure and manipulation of evidence is quite obvious. The empirical evidence in this case is absolutely profound, not to mention heinous. Justice should be swift, and the integrity of the Oficina de Asuntos lnternos is at stake. Communities deserve honest leadership.
