Costa Rica emergency officials warn of flooding, landslides as rainy season arrives

May 19th, 2015 (InsideCostaRica.com) Costa Rica’s National Emergency Commission (CNE) is warning the public to take caution as the rainy season begins to take hold.
Emergency officials warn those who live near rivers to be vigilant and have an emergency plan in place should flooding occur.
Motorists traveling on routes prone to falling debris and landslides – such as Route 32, which connects San Jose and Limon – as well as those living in areas prone to landslides, are also advised to be diligent.
Motorists should also be cautious of flooded roadways, which emergency officials blame on poorly designed drainage systems on some of the country’s roadways.
And, emergency officials warn, those living in urban areas are not immune to flash flooding. Many urban rivers are used as garbage dumps, which can affect the flow of rivers and cause them to break their banks. Many drains and sewers are also clogged with garbage and could easily overflow, officials warn.
