Costa Rica’s main international airport closed for three hours due to volcanic ash fall

May 18th, 2015 (InsideCostaRica.com) Costa Rica’s Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO) was forced to close at 3:30 a.m. Monday morning due to ash fall from the Turrialba volcano, which once again belched ash that reached the country’s Central Valley and parts of the capital over the weekend and early Monday morning.
The closure lasted three hours, and affected ten departures and four arrivals, according to airport management.
Ash fall had been reported in several areas of the Central Valley including San Jose, Santa Ana, and Heredia Monday morning, according to the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI), with the latest activity at the volcano being recorded shortly after 4 a.m.
The Turrialba volcano has remained active since it roared to life in October of last year in its largest eruption in 150 years.
One of Costa Rica’s most well-known volcanologists, Gino Gonzalez of the National Seismological Network (RSN), said in December that Turrialba could remain active and belching ash for as long as two years.
