Woman in Hospital Mexico awaits Costa Rica’s first sextuplets

May 4^th, 2015 (InsideCostaRica.com) A 34-year-old woman in Costa Rica’s Hospital Mexico is pregnant with the country’s first sextuplets, hospital staff confirm.

The woman, who wishes to remain unidentified, was admitted to the hospital late last month and is more than five months pregnant.

Hospital staff report that the woman and her six fetuses are in good health, but say that the birth will be “extremely risky.”

As a result, a team consisting of doctors from Hospital Mexico, the San Juan de Dios Hospital, and the National Children’s Hospital will all assist in the delivery.

Once an extremely rare phenomenon, fertility treatments have made multiple births slightly more common today.  But conceiving sextuplets without the use of fertility treatments is extremely rare – in fact, the odds of giving birth to sextuplets without such treatments are one in 4.7 billion.

It was not disclosed if the woman had been receiving such treatments.

The Rosenkowitz Sextuplets (born 11 January 1974 in South Africa) were the first known set of sextuplets to survive infancy.
