Riptides claim two victims at Jaco beach over the weekend

May 4th, 2015 (InsideCostaRica.com) Riptides claimed the lives of two beachgoers in separate incidents on Saturday and Sunday at Jaco beach.

 

The body of a 17-year-old identified by the last names Ferna Chavarria was discovered on the beach around 7 p.m. on Saturday near the Hicaco residential development.  Ferna and a friend had been swept to sea by a powerful undercurrent around 5 p.m.  Ferna’s friend was able to escape unharmed.

 

On Sunday morning, a young man identified by the last names Rodriguez Mora, 25 ignored warnings from lifeguards to stay out of the water due to the presence of strong riptides.

 

Rodriguez later disappeared.  Authorities were continuing to search for the man as of Sunday evening, who is believed to have drowned.

    Jaco beach and a few others have both Rip tides and Undertow. Undertow you can see one wave crashing on another before the first has a chance to recede. Riptide more like a strong river being forced out in a narrow channel. I was a water safety instructor/lifeguard once upon a time. I do not recommend anyone going into the oceans here unless they are experienced and REALLY know how to swim. FYI I was caught in a ripetide at Jaco was swept out maybe 300 meters, I relaxed then noticed I was slowly moving south about 50 meters then able to swim a little and slowly came back.. and yes I was scared however kept calm. The locals here really have no idea how to swim and how to survive in water.. Be safe all.
