Man who kidnapped Dutch couple finally captured after 19 years

February 16th, 2015 (InsideCostaRica.com) A man arrested Saturday after an armed robbery of a convenience story in Santa Fe in Los Chiles in which a man was killed has been on the run for 19 years after being accused of the kidnapping for ransom of a Dutch couple who owned a timber company in the area.

 

The man was identified by Judicial Investigation Police (OIJ) as José de Jesús Reyes Rivera, a 42-year-old Nicaraguan national.

 

Reyes is accused in the August 23rd, 1996 kidnapping of Dutch couple Huiete Sierd Zijsltra and his wife, Jetly Cuors.  The couple operated a timber company in nearby Altamira.

 

The couple was released 22 days later after the delivery of a $200,000 USD ransom.

 

Reyes was captured and beaten by local residents on Saturday while trying to make his getaway from the armed robbery and murder scene.  He was taken to the hospital under police custody as a result of his injuries.

 

In addition to charges he faces in the 19-year-old kidnapped, Reyes now faces additional charges of homicide and aggravated robbery.

    Well, that should be good for , what, six months behind bars and release for good behavior… if the cops weren’t so pre-occupied with running swat teams and burning pot crops, MAYBE they’d have time to seek out dangerous felons BEFORE they move up to homicide. And, what happened to the 2 million$ bucks ransom money this dirt-bag is ‘alleged’ to have stolen, what 19 years ago? Seems the Kops have long since surpassed the Keystone appellation.

    Now Kidnapping is becoming a daily event look at Ryan Piercy the Canadian has been missing for 4 weeks and police have not found him i know other people go missing in CR and the CR goverment does nothing to protect anybody . Costa Rica is now Mexico.

      We the public have heard zilch , nada concerning anything being done. Rumors everything from Kidnapping,to whatever.. . That a supposedly, News blackout requested by the OIJ. Assuming it was or is active kidnapping. Can you imagine the anger, frustration and concern with his son and wife over this ordeal and possible outcome. Canadian embassy surely now involved to high degree. maybe even interpol. Every day , now weeks and almost a month later where can he be? who is holding him? or is it something I do not want to speculate. Timothy Williams if you can enlighten us on anything news worthy and hopefully his safe return.

      This gives us a pause living here what if this was our family member gone missing. The police here are lets say lacking in many areas I hope this is not the case for Ryan.

        RCMP are in CR and they are struggling to get any help from CR goverment. I know lots of Canadians and US citizens are leaving CR over Ryan going missing. CR is failed state. Get out of CR before Kidnapping is the norm.

          Two thoughts 1. Is Timothy having a set back and as reported heart trouble. So young it seems.. I hope he gets better. Too bad he is the only one who can keep ICR functioning. Tim I hope you feel better and a solution to your health problems.

          the police. No signs of foul play One month later re appears at his
          doorsteps. Police said will interview him later. He said in a “few ”
          days will issue a statement . Everyone has their own reason to
          “disappear” not a crime. However what is the real story or am I the
          only one .. Have we been Hoodwinked EH! I notice this kind of thing
          gets taken off immediately why is that?? Anyone anywhere have any
          additional information??”
