Tip from Colombia leads to seizure of 500kg of cocaine in Costa Rica’s southern zone

December 9th, 2014 (InsideCostaRica.com) Information from authorities in Colombia led to the capture of three men carrying 500 kilograms of cocaine on a fishing boat, three nautical miles offshore from Punta Burica, in Costa Rica’s southern zone, on Monday.

 

A helicopter from the Air Surveillance Service was able to pinpoint the vessel while at sea in Costa Rican waters, and relayed the craft’s location to the Coast Guard, who were able to intercept the vessel.

 

The suspects aboard the fishing vessel attempted to escape by jumping into the sea, but authorities were able to quickly capture the men.

 

Arrested were two Costa Rican men identified by the last names Matarrita, 40 and Delgado, 31, both residents of Golfito, neither of which have a criminal record.  A third suspect who claimed to be Panamanian was also arrested.

 

The fishing vessel belongs to a Golfito cooperative and had not been reported missing.

      A unwinnable war that is very costly, both in financial terms and in human lives. Major changes need to take place. We have militarized societies (including CR’s police) to fight it, and just have you have mentioned, it is cheaper and more plentiful than ever. There is a plethora of obvious corruption that keeps it going. We repeatedly imprison these peons (for show) and the real bosses are pretty much untouchable. This is a major SCAM on society! We can and should re-allocate the funding to be better utilized in society. Instead we waste it, funding ridiculous things like a radar program in the Coco’s Islands. If one massive load gets thru, then it is a windfall for narcos who do things like invest in real estate to launder the funds. All governments are complicit. Countries like El Salvador, Guatamala and Honduras are failed states with the highest murder rates in the world. They further add to the problem by having a mass exodus of their citizens trying to escape the violence. They illegally immigrate to other countries an increase financial burdens on systems. How much longer can this idiotic and corrupt policy continue? Until people demand change from their governments, we will be stuck in this vicious cycle.
