Costa Rica seeks to capture brother of famed British-American movie director for alleged contract killing

December 8^th, 2014 (InsideCostaRica.com) Costa Rica has issued an Interpol “Red Notice” seeking the immediate capture and extradition of Matthew Francis Nolan, the brother of the British-American movie director best known for directing the 2014 Hollywood blockbuster Interstellar, Christopher Nolan.

Costa Rican authorities claim that Nolan was a “hired killer” contracted to kidnap, torture and kill American accountant Robert Cohen, 63, while he was visiting the country.  Cohen’s body, showing signs of torture, was discovered under the Chirripo River Bridge in Matina, Limon, on March 10^th, 2005.

The Interpol arrest warrant, issued late last week, comes after Costa Rican authorities failed in an attempt to have Nolan extradited from the United States in 2009, when a U.S. judge determined that the evidence presented by Costa Rica was insufficient.

During the 2009 hearing, Costa Rica told a US District Court that the victim, Cohen, worked as an accountant for millionaire Florida gem dealer, Robert Breska, who was sentenced to four years in prison in the 1980’s after being exposed as a drug trafficker.

When $12 million of Breska’s money went missing, he blamed Cohen, according to Costa Rican investigators.  Cohen, for his part, claimed his Costa Rican business partner, Mario Quintana, stole the money.  Quintana was found shot dead in 2004 in an apparent suicide.

Cohen, realizing he had lost any chance of recovering the funds after Quintana’s suicide, feared for his life, according to court documents.

This is when Breska allegedly brought in Nolan to attempt to recover the money from Cohen.

According to Costa Rican authorities, Nolan traveled to Costa Rica – using a false passport – to meet Cohen in March 2005, where he also met a hotel employee, Luis Alonso Douglas Mejia, who would later be convicted in Costa Rica for assisting Nolan in Cohen’s kidnapping and murder.

On March 6^th, according to investigators, witnesses describe seeing Nolan and Mejia forcing Cohen into a vehicle.  A hotel security camera also captured Nolan and Cohen together.  Cohen was later taken to a house in Liverpool de Limon, according to Costa Rican investigators.

After the alleged kidnapping, Nolan apparently left Costa Rica, traveling to Texas, Paris, New York and Miami before returning to Costa Rica three days later, when he went to the house where Mejia was allegedly holding Cohen captive.

According to Costa Rican authorities, Nolan and Mejia subjected Cohen to continuous beatings that ultimately caused “a massive hemorrhage that resulted in death.”

Nolan currently lives as a free man with his wife and two sons in a luxury townhouse in Chicago, the UK’s Daily Mail reported in November, which published an extensive report on the case.
