Bill would reduce legal alcohol limit to zero for those behind the wheel

December 5th, 2014 (InsideCostaRica.com) Costa Rica’s Traffic Police are backing a bill presented by National Restoration Party legislator, Fabricio Alvarado, which would reduce to zero the legal limit for alcohol (BAC) for motorists.

 

While the bill has received the support of the Traffic Police, some business owners are concerned.

 

“It could certainly hurt business if a customer can’t even have a glass of wine with their meal.  They may decide to eat at home where they can enjoy themselves,” a restaurant owner in Escazu, who preferred to not be identified, said.  “The vast majority of our customers are responsible.”

 

Alvarado and the Traffic Police, however, point out that well over one hundred road deaths between January and September of this year were attributed to alcohol, and zero tolerance would save lives.

    THe level for a drunk should be 1.0 the zero level is stupid. What they should pass is no benefits for Government workers and reduce the debt of the country.

    Prediction: It either won’t pass (most likely) or it will pass with such a light fine that the few violators who are caught will simply pay it. Only the more affluent quarter of the population drives anyway, and with cars and gas so expensive, a small fine won’t phase them.

    Oh, third prediction: If passed, it won’t be enforced. Enforcement would be easy, since anyone coming out of a bar and getting into a vehicle is probably guilty. However, it would also be easy to enforce other traffic laws, like those requiring headlights at night and calling for motorists to stop at red lights. I could keep a squad of traffic cops busy writing tickets at any number of intersections near where I live, yet the cops who happen to be at those intersections never bother to issue citations.

    Oh heck, it won’t be passed. The legislators are after all among the 25% who drive, and most of them drink a bit. They’ll never pass a law against themselves.

      I remember they were going to stop drinking on the beaches.
