December 4th, 2014 (InsideCostaRica.com) The Costa Rican Chamber of Hotels (CCH) reports up to 91% of hotel rooms on the country’s coasts are booked for the Christmas and New Year holiday season.

 

The Central Pacific remains the most popular destination this holiday season, where CCH estimates that 91% of rooms are booked, followed closely by Guanacaste, where 89% of rooms are estimated to be booked.

 

The South Pacific continues to grow in popularity as well, where about 85% of rooms are estimated to be booked.

 

Vacationers having trouble finding a last-minute room on the Pacific coast may want to consider the Caribbean side of the country, where CCH estimates that slightly less than 70% of rooms are booked.

    Let’s remember that the Ticos who can afford to go to the beach this year. With a 19% budget increase, holiday closings of government offices, and an average of over $1600 Christmas bonus in their pockets, lots of CR’s public servants will be hitting the waves later this month. We won’t really know much about tourism until January.

      Agreed! This is no reflection of international tourism trends. These bookings are domestic tourism, typical for the holiday season. It is a Tico tradition to head to the Pacific for the Christmas holiday and Semana Santa. Since the Central Valley is home to most of the country’s population, the Central Pacific accommodations are the closest and most popular. During the real international tourist season, the North Pacific sees more activity, especially now that so many flights go directly to Liberia.

      This is a digression, but Costa Rica really needs to re-think its holiday schedule. Countries really cannot attend to the business of governing and providing necessary services to the people if everything closes down for so many days at a time. Also, governmental offices and other businesses need to stay open during lunch hours – this can be accomplished easily by having employees take their lunch breaks in two different shifts (e.g., 11:30-12:30 and 12:30-1:30), with half the employees being available at all times. I don’t know why retailers haven’t realized that other working people might want to use their lunch hours to do business. I worked over 30 years in govwrnment where it was required that half the staff be present during lunch hours and holidays – the public would have been outraged by less.
