12,000 people turn out for the lighting of the Children’s Museum

December 4th, 2014 (InsideCostaRica.com) Some 12,000 children and parents gathered at the National Children’s Museum Wednesday night to witness the traditional lighting of its façade for the holiday season.
The most exciting part of the tradition for the thousands of children gathered Wednesday night was the fireworks show that has accompanied the lighting ceremony since its beginning 14 years ago.
The fort-like building that houses the Children’s Museum is actually the former Central Penitentiary, which was closed in 1979. After 12 years of sitting abandoned, the building became the home of the Children’s Museum on April 27th, 1994, the vision of former First Lady, Gloria Bejarano de Calderon.
Nearly 300,000 visit the museum each year. Children and adults can learn about science, nature, biology, ancient cultures, and much more.
