More than 200,000 people expected to cross Costa Rica-Nicaragua border this holiday season

December 2nd, 2014 (InsideCostaRica.com) More than 200,000 people are expected to cross the Costa Rica-Nicaragua border this holiday season, according to immigration authorities.
Both Costa Rican and Nicaraguan authorities are planning to bring in extra staff and extend their working hours to deal with the demand, particularly at the Peñas Blancas border crossing.
Thousands of Nicaraguan immigrants return to their native country each year to enjoy the holidays with their loved ones before returning to Costa Rica after the New Year.
And, as in years past, they will be returning south with more of their countrymen and women when the holidays are over – immigration authorities estimate some 73,000 migrant workers will be needed during the fast-approaching harvest season. Most of these workers, who work in the harvest of coffee, melons, beans, bananas, sugarcane and pineapple, are from Nicaragua.
