Costa Rica’s prison guards to go on strike

November 24th, 2014 (InsideCostaRica.com) Costa Rica’s prison guards are planning to go on strike today to demand that the government pay overtime that workers claim has been owed to them in some cases for as long ten years.

Union leaders are demanding full and immediate payment to the some 3,600 employees who are responsible for the country’s prison system.

Prison workers plan to stage protests in several areas of San Jose and will also picket the San Sebastian Prison.

Prison workers from the Buen Pastor, San Sebastian, La Reforma and Virilla prisons are all expected to take part in the strike.  It is not clear how order will be maintained in the prisons with the guards’ absence.

Reports indicate that the government is seeking resources to partially catch up with its obligations during the first half of December.

My other comment about reopening the Island prison. Take fewer guards and they are all located in one area..

Let me understand something. CR is broke and borrowing 60% plus their budget. The 13th Check Aguinaldo on it’s way next week. Christmas vacation and now the guards demanding all their pay.. A rerun of the 6 or 8 week teacher strike. Sure the guards should have been paid. However what is the back story on all this??

The prisons are full of contraband, brought in by guards, family and the conjugal visits Nice EH! I am all for giving them weed to smoke keep them docile and mellow. Who really watching them now?/ The other prisoners are running the placer is my bet..

  • HONEST MAN

Over three weekend i had a call fom a US couple that have lived in Costa Rica for 5 years that i have know for 4 years. They called me to tell me a story that happened to them. 4 week ago there condo was broken into by three robbers they tied them up and stole everything in there Condo including fridge and stove. After the robbers left the couple managed to get free and called the police and the police took around 40 min to get there. The police tell the retired couple this is common now in CR. The US couple have now have left CR and put there condo up for sale. The honest truth Costa Rica is a real mess i hear stories all the time about robbery and murder in CR. The goverment system is corupt and now the people are on there own to defend there home and property. Good luck prison guards and police 50% of you should be in jail with corupt people the other 50% look the other way.

Sunday went to a pre Thanksgiving dinner. 10 couples, 3 of which told me they are leaving next month for good. They had fortunately rented and are now selling their stuff. one couple have a house to unload and have it up now for 6 months. What happen to them was coming home to a home that was ransacked. The guards just gave them blank stares I suspect they were involved. And the beat goes on!

The truth be told, in general the government of Costa Rica sets a very poor example for the rest of the country.
