Bill would protect rights of those with HIV

November 4th, 2014 (InsideCostaRica.com) A bill that has been presented to the Human Rights Commission of Costa Rica’s Legislative Assembly intends to eliminate all forms of discrimination against those who are HIV positive, including discrimination that those who are HIV positive routinely face in the workplace.

 

Amongst other provisions, the bill would prohibit employers from firing or reassigning employees on the grounds of being HIV positive and would prohibit those who are HIV positive from being forced to disclose their condition.

 

According to official data, there are 6,606 people living with HIV in Costa Rica and there were 694 new cases in 2013.

 

The bill, which is supported by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), would also prohibit criminal charges against those who unknowingly transmit the disease.

    Well, that’s a good start. Now, how about foreign residents and tourists and a law making it illegal to discriminate against them, as in making them pay ten dollars for something that costs everyone else three dollars, for example.
