Route 27 remains partially closed after weekend landslide

November 3^rd, 2014 (InsideCostaRica.com) Route 27, the toll highway connecting San Jose to the pacific port of Caldera, remained mostly closed Sunday night after a weekend landslide between the Atenas and Orotina interchanges blocked the route.

Globalvia, which operates the highway, said assessments would be made Monday morning to determine if it was safe to fully reopen the highway, as there are concerns about possible landslides along other stretches of the route.

Some sections of the route have already been reopened as of Monday morning, according to reports by readers.

Globalvia said the landslide was caused by heavy rains in recent days, as well as by a series of moderate earthquakes that occurred during the early hours of Saturday morning.

The landslide struck a vehicle, though none of the occupants or other motorists were injured.

An April report by the National Laboratory of Materials and Structural Models (LANAMME) of the University of Costa Rica (UCR) warned that at least six slopes on the highway posed risk of collapse or landslide.
