Violent clashes grip Costa Rica’s main port city

October 27th, 2014 (InsideCostaRica.com) Demonstrations which began last week after the government sent 150 police officers to retake the country’s Atlantic ports from striking dockworkers took a decidedly violent turn over the weekend, marked with violent clashes between police and groups of mostly young demonstrators in Limon.

 

Police struggled this weekend to control the violence, which has occurred mostly after sundown.

 

Dozens of youth blocked roads throughout the city of Limon and other districts with burning tires and other debris.

 

Police in riot gear attempting to remove the barricades were met with masked youth throwing rocks and even homemade explosive devices filled with gunpowder and nails in at least 30 different locations.  Police responded with volleys of tear gas while police helicopters attempted to monitor the situation in the city from the air and coordinate police action.

 

In one incident, police reportedly came under fire from someone with an automatic weapon, though no officers were hit by the gunfire.

 

In two other incidents, truck drivers were forced from their vehicles and the shipping containers they were carrying set ablaze, according to initial reports.

    If this continues the Dock workers should be fired, I am sure there are plenty of people that would like there well paid jobs!

      On another online source this morning I read that none of those detained were dock workers and that the union disavowed any relationship with them and condemned their actions. This appears is another case of a bunch of losers taking advantage of a situation to create havoc.

      That being said, the situation wouldn’t exist had it not been for the union’s protests earlier and they do have an implied culpability for creating the conflict.

      I guess you don´t get what is happening in Costa Rica. The people are starting to rise up against the corupt system. More protests coming soon and expect Police to use tough tactics.

        I am well aware of the Corrupt Government but that has nothing to do with building a Modern Port system.So why are these people protesting. They should protest about over paid government workers !

        My step son works for MOPT. He said if anyone causes trouble, including some extended family would reflect on his job. Arm twisting with any protest even on Face Book. Also over half of all the workers have a government job in CR. He said he will not risk what little he has.

          Lets Remenber that most Costa Rican Goverment staff never want to screw up there gravy train but everyone else in Costa Rica aka Private citizens that fund the goverment want something better than the corupt goverment staff and the gangster elected officials. Mopt is a mess and they throw money away like garbage. The Public goverment staff are the problem so corupt they make the mafia look good.

            I agree it took him 6 yrs before they hired him prematurely now going on 12 yrs. , Others behind him where promoted over him because of FAMILY connections. His job a draftsman. Does not pay much however every weekend , holiday , 3 weeks vacation . I think he makes about 425,000 a month minus his CAJA/pension. He knows to keep his mouth shut, the TICO way here.

            This is very low wage i looked into mopt drafting people they earn around 1490.000 starting out at Mopt.

    So lets get this straight the goverment is arresting protestor now. Intresting the tactic of CR Prez use the Police if you protest or get upset at goverment. BIG BUSINESS FIRST ALWAYS. Limon problems are because of Goverment and has done nothing to help the poor people in Limon. Prez of Costa Rica is just using the new tactic to solve problems its called if you don´t like what the goverment does we will arrest you. That´s called police state now in Costa Rica. Reminds me of Batista´s Cuba. Remenber what happened in Cuba could happen in Costa Rica. Lots of Costa Ricans are meeting in private and saying enough with Goverment in Costa Rica. I hear Costa Rican saying where is all the money going? How come the Congress gets paid so well for doing nothing? Why does the President travel everywhere and the country has no money. How come Public sector get piad better than the Private sector? People are starting to get very upset. What will happen next in CR

    Their is a Mafia at the PORT and always has been. The Mafia ( Black Jamacian) runs the Port and they don’t want anyone into there CASH COW. They charge what ever they want in Taxes for home goods and cars. Half the time you get only half your car and half your goods. There is some much theft there because of the Black Market and all they stuff that
    is SOLD on the street from those that stole it off the containers and Cars.
    Wake up… The Mafia does not want a NEW LARGER PORT… THEY WILL HAVE TO SHARE THE STEALING AND TAXES. IT is time that C.R. took Back their Port and the ADDED CORRUPTION… MAFIA AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT MAFIA..

      How do you spell civil war? You are exactly right….this is the Government Mafia taking on the Jamaican Mafia that runs this port. I hope they both destroy each other!
