5.3 temblor recorded in Costa Rica prior to powerful 7.3 Nicaragua earthquake
October 14th, 2014 (InsideCostaRica.com) A magnitude-7.3 earthquake struck off the coast of northern Nicaragua at 9:51 p.m. Monday night, killing at least one person and sparking a tsunami alert. The epicenter was 42 miles west-southwest of Jiquilillo, according to the USGS.
The powerful earthquake was felt throughout much of Central America, including Costa Rica, as well as El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala and Panama.
Nicaraguan emergency officials are continuing to assess the damage from the quake, which was followed by at least 17 aftershocks in Nicaragua alone.
The University of Costa Rica recorded a magnitude 5.3 earthquake s20 minutes prior to the powerful Nicaragua quake, with its epicenter 37 kilometers from Bahia Ballena, in Osa.
There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries in Costa Rica.
