Costa Rica sees growth in exports of organic produce

October 14th, 2014 (InsideCostaRica.com) Costa Rica has been able to capitalize on the increasing international demand for organic produce over the last two years, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) and representatives of the National Organic Agriculture Program (PNAO).

 

The country saw an increase in exports of organic produce of more than 2,000 tons in both 2012 and 2013 compared to 2011.

 

According to the PNAO, nearly 70% of the country’s organic produce was sold on the international market in 2013.

 

Costa Rica exported 13,000 tons of organic produce in 2013.

 

Costa Rica is home to more than 2,000 small organic farmers producing vegetables, legumes, coffee, bananas, pineapples and other crops, according to the PNAO.

 

Besides the demand for organic produce, Costa Rica’s farmers in general have made strides in reducing agricultural chemical use in recent years.  According to the State Phytosanitary Service, Costa Rica’s farmers used just 9.1 kilograms of agrochemicals per hectare in 2013, compared to 20.1 kilograms in 2008.

    Is it the organic produce or the cocaine that is often hidden in it that is creating such a world market? Sorry, but corruption is just too institutionalized in Costa Rica to think any differently. And seeing people like Jorge Chavarria getting re-appointed, further solidifies that this corruption will continue with impunity. Maybe General John Kelly can be an advisor and offer some input on organic gardening…

    Not organic..maybe they use a little less than the tons of pesticides that all the other farmers use here but not organic. Pura vida

    I suppose it’s smart to be suspicious, but on the face of it this is really good news. Small organic farms exporting produce is a real step up from a banana republic and tourist economy.
