October 10th, 2014 (InsideCostaRica.com) A bill being put forth by PUSC party lawmaker, Humberto Vargas, would ban all forms of child beauty pageants in Costa Rica.
The bill’s aim is to end “the objectifications of girls, boys, and adolescents which encourages the early eroticism” of children and teens and the “hyper-sexualization” of young girls.
The bill argues that such pageants can encourage pedophilia, as well as sexual violence and child sex trafficking.
The bill would ban anyone under the age of 16 from participating in beauty pageants.
The bill has gained the support of the child welfare agency, PANI.
