Boat caught carrying more than a ton of marijuana for the second time this month

September 24^th, 2014 (InsideCostaRica.com) Costa Rica’s Coast Guard was able to recover 1,335 kilos of compressed marijuana that was thrown from a boat after a short chase in the Caribbean Sea on Monday.

Authorities were able to arrest the boat’s four crew, surnamed Ortega, Zuniga, Hodson, and Muñoz.

The chase began after a United States P3 aircraft notified Costa Rica’s Coast Guard of a suspicious vessel about 100 kilometers from Puerto Limon.

The vessel, named “Nak II,” and carrying registration number L-3423 on its hull, was related to the seizure of another 1,447 kilos of marijuana just days earlier on September 12^th.

In that incident, United States and Costa Rican authorities intercepted the vessel and gave chase, but the vessel was able to escape into Panamanian waters.

During that chase, the crew dumped more than a ton of marijuana into the sea, which was recovered by authorities.

Authorities are attempting to determine if the men arrested on Monday were also those on board the vessel during the September 12^th incident.
